  1. How the Photon Micro-Light Saved My Life in Russia
    By David K. Gatto
While living in Samara, Russia as a volunteer law professor for the Civic Education Project, I kept a Photon Micro-Light on my key chain. During the ten months that I was there, I found it to be one of my most useful assets. I often used my Photon I yellow key model to safely find my way around dark streets and buildings but I never would have guessed that the light would save my life.
Late one Friday night in the early spring, I was walking home alone through some dreary Soviet housing blocks on a path that I took every day. The night was darker than usual because there was no moon. There were few streetlights on my route so I was carrying my Photon in my hand. As I approached an archway passing underneath a building, a huge German shepherd charged out from the darkness barking and snarling with ferocity. Thinking quickly, I leveled my Photon at the dog’s wolf-like head and shined the bright yellow light in his eyes. Blinded by the light, the animal stopped dead in its tracks. Continuing to bark and growl, the confused canine circled to my right. All the while I kept the enraged dog’s eyes ablaze with the bright yellow beam. The stunned Shepherd briefly fell back a few yards then renewed its onslaught with the same result: blinded by my tiny yet powerful Photon the frustrated hound stopped about six feet away from me menacingly barking and flashing his teeth as I held him off with the light until his owners finally arrived. From that moment on, I always had my Photon in my hand when walking after dark in Russia!

  2. Top-Of-PageSaturday last I saw your Photon micro-lights in a bookstore. I purchased one as I have severe vision problems and regularly need extra light even to read menus in restaurants. I was delighted.
That night my wife and I took my small trawler out to our club for dinner. We arrived back at the darkened marina after 10:00 pm. My wife and I were securing the boat and canvas covers, we were hurrying because it looked about to rain and in my suit and tie I didn’t want to get wet. I noticed a light in the pilothouse and rushed down the darkened pier to extinguish it. I walked right off the end of the dock into ten feet of salt water. I surfaced finally and called for my wife while trying to hang onto the rub rail of the boat. I was hidden under the lee of the hull. I reached for my new light, which had been so useful earlier at the club. I pressed the button, soaked by salt water it flickered and came on. My wife saw the light and raced to the rail with a life ring and rope and helped me out of the water. Thanks for making such a good product.

  3. The other day I sprinted across 3 lanes of a six-lane street. In the process I dropped my keys. I stood on the median and watched a semi hit my ring of keys with at least 3 tires. When the traffic cleared I went back and picked up a small pile of broken plastic from my car remote control and some badly bent keys. My Photon Micro-Light II was still working fine.

  4. My Photon has served me well. When lost in the wood after dark it brought me home, when my keys were lost it helped me find them and when confronted by a mugger it blinded him long enough for me to thwart him. I just bought my wife and children each one for their key rings.

  5. Top-Of-PageI recently received a white Photon II from my brother in law. The very next day it unfortunately proved to be very useful. I say unfortunately because my girlfriends apt. Building caught on fire!!! Luckily everyone in the building and all of my girlfriend’s possessions were saved. Due to the fire dept checking the building for safety and putting out the last of the spot fires we were unable to get a majority of her belongings out during daylight. The damage to her apt was significant enough that we needed to empty the room she was renting that night… having no light in the building made this extremely difficult until I remembered my new light on my keys. I popped it on and it gave us plenty of light to get everything out. An excellent product indeed. Thank You! I intend on recommending it to all my friends. I also work as a Network Cable tech and the little light is ideal in small crawl spaces.

  6. The Network People started coming around the office to take still another PC Inventory. They needed to record the serial numbers from the back of both the PC’s and the monitors. One of them pulled out a Web Server to get the serial number, unplugging it in the process. Ouch, that was not a graceful shutdown. I offered to lend the Network People my Photon II and suggested they use an old CD as a mirror. With the Photon rubber banded to the end of a ruler and a CD similarly set up they conducted the rest of the inventory without having to move any equipment. After a full day on, my trusty photon still shines brightly and the office was disaster free for the rest of the inventory.
    Ken Edelstein

  7. I checked out my projection TV with my new Photon II after the movers whisked it into storage. They were trying to pull a fast one, having badly damaged it in transit. Without the Photon, I would not have known, with it I got a $135 settlement check. It certainly paid for itself the first month!

  8. Top-Of-PageI am a security guard in a high-rise building in San Francisco. Especially with the elevated risk of earthquakes in our area I carry my Fusion with me at all times and find is extremely useful during my nightly patrols.

  9. I am a knife dealer – I purchased a Fusion for my own use during Hurricane Isabel. It worked great in the storm. Excellent product!

  10. I have had my Photon II for a year or so and while it has been generally useful, it hasn’t really had a chance to be a lifesaver. Carried in my pocket at all times it mostly sees use at nighttime. That is until recently. Working part time as a dispatcher I load trucks with pallets. The pallets are marked with spray paint to show their destination. On this particular day the truck was fully loaded with pallets and we were unsure if an important pallet that had been loaded up front was marked correctly. With no lights inside the truck we had one option…. To unload the entire truck.
But not so I pulled out my Photon, clambered to the back of the truck and shone the beam onto the painted pallet. To make a longer story short a lot of time was saved and the whole operation hassle free thanks to the small high-powered Photon that I can carry everywhere.

  11. I got my blue Photon 3 yesterday. It came in excellent timing as we had an electricity power shutdown of more than 8 hours (!!) tonight and I used all my Photons (II and 3) to find my way around my darkened apartment – couldn’t think of a better use for that versatile light that is always there with my keys. Thanks so much for that extra yellow Photon II and extra set of lithium batteries!! This is what I call great customer service, which fully justifies the little extra money your LED lights cost over copycat low-quality competition. I am glad to know that there are companies like yours that honor both their products and customers and do not hesitate to take that extra mile in standing behind their commitments.

  12. In Pittsburgh every year the Friday before Thanksgiving the city has “Light-up Night”. All of the buildings leave all of their lights on after everyone has gone home for the day. The Mayor turns on the Official city tree, different groups wander around town singing, of course the stores all stay open and so on. Contrary to the perception that some have of Pittsburgh, it has not been a smoky city for many years and really looks quite pretty at night with all the lights turned on.
I have a friend who owns a catering business and this year was lucky enough to be hired by a major corporation to feed 150 volunteers who spent the evening soliciting funds for the local children’s hospital. My 10-year-old son and I came to town to give my friend a hand. At the appointed hour we started serving a hot meal to the many volunteers. This was done in a nice, clean, warm, tent that the corporation had rented. Of course we also had a generator to provide electricity for lighting the tent. Well I am sure that you have guessed what happened, only five minutes after we started serving, the generator ran out of gas. Have you ever tried to serve hot food in the dark? My son, who until that time was keeping him occupied by playing Pac Man on my pocket PC, was called into action. For the next twenty minutes or so he held my Photon II so that I wouldn’t dump hot food onto my friends customers. Five minutes before we were done serving, the generator came back on. Murphy’s Law.
Tonight, the Sunday after the event, I am placing an order for another Photon II. Now that my son has mine, well, it is his. And with thanks for a job well done by all concerned, you could say that my Photon did “Light-up” our night. Thanks for the memory.

  13. Top-Of-PageWell, it happened today… I live outside of a small town. While I was in town today, there was a lightening storm and the power went out everywhere. I went by a Sporting Goods store to look at new sneakers; the owner was standing in the doorway and informed me that they were closed. When I asked why, she looked at me like I was stupid and said “the lights are out”. I asked about looking at some sneakers and she just looked at me. I said, “It’s OK. I have a flashlight”. I proceeded to the very back corner of the store. It lit up the store it was amazing. When I got to the shoe section, I switched to my white Photon II, in order to see colors better. Unfortunately I didn’t find what I was looking for, so I switched back to the turquoise and easily found my way back to the front of the store. No one said anything; they just looked at the brilliant light coming from my key ring with amazement on their faces. I just smiled and chuckled to myself as I left I thought I ought to tell ya’ll this story.

  14. I received an email from my niece in New Jersey. When she visited last I gave her a Photon light. She told me that two days ago she and her husband were in their attorney’s office signing documents when the power went out. After a moments panic, she whipped out her Photon and they finished the signing that was required. Not the usual “it saved my life” story, but I thought it was rather neat anyway.
    Ruth Davis

  15. Top-Of-PageCongratulations on making the flashlight that saved the day during the blackout of 2003. I received a Photon light a few years ago as a gift. Occasionally I’ve used it to read a map in the car or illuminate the front door lock. Thursday August 14, 2003, at 4:10 pm I was in midtown Manhattan, fleeing Port Authority Bus Terminal when the lights went out, fearing the worst.
Living as I have for many years, five blocks north of the World Trade Center site, I have successfully weathered terrorist threats to the safety of my family and the continuity of my neighborhood. This was just a power outage.
But life goes on and my first need after determining that my family was safe was – a working bathroom! The nearest multistory hotel in Times Square? Sorry thousands of guests lined the street hoping to return to their rooms soon. Times Square Visitors Center? Sorry, we’re closing. McDonalds? Sorry, you can’t come in here in the dark. Nearby Charley O’s Restaurant? Sure, our ladies room is open, but it’s REALLY dark in there. Oh. Wait – no problem – I have this little flashlight on my key chain. Standing in the middle of the floor in the pitch black and reflecting it off the ceiling, I was the Statue of Bathroom Liberty – lighting the way for my fellow desperate, and then very happy, guests.
And there’s more… That night over candlelit dinner – reached up 5 flights of wonderfully well-lit stairs – my husband realized that his company’s payroll was due the next morning. The paperwork was on his desk in his midtown Manhattan office, on the 12th floor. Further uptown the power was working and a fax machine could be found. But the proper forms had to be submitted.
His office’s building was blacked out; the stairwell emergency lights had long since burned out. Your flashlight once again worked safely and effectively 12 flights.
Paychecks should be distributed today or tomorrow.
As you can imagine, the little light is playing a starring role in our personal memories and stories of the blackout of 2003. We have recommended to everyone who asks how we got along those 29 hours. And we got along a lot better because of it.

  16. Top-Of-PageWhile visiting my brother (graphic artist/hiker), last weekend, to show off our new baby, he gave me a little, white light and energetically explained how great is was. That night, a rare power outage hit out S. California area while my wife was breast feeding and I was reading the info on this new light. My wife grabbed the light and continued her duties as she explained that I had to get my own little light, that one was hers.

  17. Last spring I bought yellow Photons for my families key rings. Recently I was in Florida on business staying in a large hotel. I arrived after dark and after getting settled in my room. The power went out. Everything including the telephones went off. There was scattered emergency lighting but none in the rooms. Needless to say we had to evacuate. Luckily for me, my Photon showed several of my floor mates and myself the way down the darkened stairwell. Everyone wanted to know about the light and wanted to buy one of their own.

  18. I was on the road recently expounding on the grand virtues of our nationally recognized upholstery material when I ran afoul of mother natures fury. Finding myself in a local Inn with no power, no lights to shave or shower, no visual way of navigating my dark room, an L.R.I “light bulb” lit over my head and I remembered that on my key chain I had a Photon Micro light II in romantic sapphire blue. Well let it be told to all and shouted to the heavens that I enjoyed a relatively normal shave and shower because of this wonderful little “adult toy”. My day was an overwhelming success with customers and I attribute that to my carefree and relaxed approach thanks to starting my day with MY Photon Micro-Light II.

  19. Top-Of-PageWe are just recovering from the worst ice storm in living memory up here in Eastern Canada. Some locations in Quebec and Ontario may not see power for several weeks yet as hundreds of power poles and hundreds of kilometers of transmission line will have to be completely replaced. Fortunately our home in Nova Scotia with out for only 48 hours. Needless to say, my white Photon II was my MAIN source of light the whole time and was totally indispensable. I got my big flashlight out once to try it but put it away as being unnecessary baggage as long as I had the Photon. In fact, the rest of my family forced me to take other Photons out of stock and outfit them as well. They kid me now as being something of an evangelist regarding their merits!

  20. I am a Physician and practice in both a hospital and a clinic in New Castle, Indiana. Today (November 20, 2000) I was working late in the clinic. I was with my last patient and it was about 5:45 PM. The overcast winter sky and light snow flurries made for a pretty dark and gloomy evening. The power went out and it was pitch black in the examining room. I immediately realized that I had my Photon Micro-Light attached to my key chain. As I reached for the light I calmed my patient and his wife. The intense white light of the Photon lit up the room nicely and I directed everyone into the hallway. My nurse had been in her office and was relieved that there was light to see by. I completed my dictation and we all left the building… no fuss. Needless to say this incredible little device saved the day. A must have on anyone’s key chain. I am planning on giving a Photon Micro-Light to my nurse and receptionist for Christmas. By the way, the light has been very useful for examining pupilary reflexes on rounds.
Thank you for bringing this excellent product to the marketplace.
    Sincerely
    Peter Nechay, M.D.

  21. Top-Of-PageThis is one of the best products I’ve ever had. I doubt if a day goes by that I don’t use the Photon at least once. It’s saved my butt several times as the manager of a Hawaiian resort when the lights went out in our complex, I have to fumble around for tools to go make sure the emergency generator is operating the pumps to the wastewater plant. You DON’T want to know what happens if that system fails! I often use the light when hooking up wires, etc. to backs of computers/VCRs/anything, because it’s usually so difficult to see back there and big flashlights won’t fit. I think the battery would have lasted for years if my grandson didn’t turn the switch on and leave it on.

  22. In the course of a lifetime spent as much as possible in the outdoors, I have used many different flashlights, lanterns and other lighting devices, so I eagerly anticipated “trying out’ your Photon Micro-Light. When I received it I was doubly impressed with the simplicity of its design and the almost incredible brightness of the light. In my job as the Supply and Purchasing Manager for a textile company, I often find that the advertised quality and/or features of a marketed item are far removed from the received-reality. Your light, however, exceeded my expectations. And when I had reason to make use of it at work the other day, it definitely exceeded the expectations of my co-workers.
During the middle of one afternoon last week, a severe lightning storm struck our area, and the electrical power in my plant was knocked out. Several members of our administrative staff and I were in a windowless office area, which went from fluorescent-bright to the pitches of black in an instant. I was carrying the Micro-Light with its convenient size, one can always carry it – and using it I led the others to an area with natural lighting. What made this incident so personally satisfying was the fact that a couple of those people who followed the beam of the Photon had previously made “light” of “that little laser pointer” when I had shown it to them after I had first acquired it. Afterwards these same people asked me where they could purchase a Photon for themselves. Obviously the only true test for any light must be held in darkness.
In closing let me thank you for producing such an economical, well designed and convenient lighting device.
    Sincerely,
    Ernie Lambert

  23. Top-Of-PageOne night about 10:20pm, my wife and I were in bed watching the news. The power suddenly went out. Our two St Bernards managed to hop on our bed from their usual sleeping corners elsewhere in the house. I had my turquoise Photon II on my night stand, we talked about just going to sleep anyway but our dogs wouldn’t let us. They were worried with the lighting and thunder outside. After a few minutes I had an idea. I got out of bed and got my red Photon II, which I use for astronomy, tied a string on it and hung it on the wall. Since the red light has a battery life of 120 hours, I left it on all night. Our dogs calmed down and went back to their corners to sleep. It surely brightened the room; you could see the furniture and everything I had only had the Photons for a month, I am sure glad I had them that night. They are awesome little lights.

  24. I have been very impressed with your amazingly bright and long-lasting Photon Micro-Light since I got one two years ago from my father in Eugene. Thank you for putting out such an excellent product! I keep mine on my key ring, and the other day while my wife and I were at the movie theater, the power went out. We were able to shine the Photon Micro-Light up the aisle to let people find their way out! Amazingly bright.

  26. I purchased a Photon to use at work. I am an RN on a critical care unit at night. I use the light during patient assessments as well as those frequent trips into dark rooms to check equipment.
I purchased another one so I have one even when I am not at work.
    David Simons RN, EMT

  27. This summer my family and I traveled to a mountain village in Guatemala on a work project. One of the long-term projects there is a health clinic. While familiarizing ourselves with the clinic, we were told that an infant was in the emergency room. A nurse in our group rushed there to see if she could assist. I accompanied her as the photographer. What we found was a severely dehydrated baby who had spent the past two days on her mother’s back traveling to the clinic. Her blood pressure was so low that, between two nurses and dozens of attempts, they could not locate a vein to start an I.V. The baby’s stomach was extended, her eyes were unresponsive and everyone was beginning to be desperate. One of the nurses asked if anyone had a flashlight. Of course, I always carry a Photon light. She used it to shine through the infant’s hand, hoping the veins would be visibly dark against the pink skin. Using this method, they found a vein and were able to save the infant’s life. Thanks for making a reliable light small enough to go everywhere.
    Steven Peer

  28. My wish is to have the Photon II UV. As an optometrist, I could use it for emergency eye injuries with sodium dye…anywhere

  29. Top-Of-PageI work as an ER/Trauma technician hospital and carry my Photon II attached to my EMT scissors. When checking emergency room patients or transporting patients into rooms at night the turquoise light illuminates my surroundings without disturbing patients. During the weekly generator checks and the power goes temporarily down, the light provides security. Its small size and long lasting power make it an important tool for emergency room use.

  30. I am a Paramedic FF with the Seattle Medic One, I have a white Photon attached to my stethoscope so I always have light to check vital signs at concerts or any other light deprived areas. Works like a champ.

  35. Your Photon light is an incredible product, but it is outshone by your customer service. I am a Chiropractor, I have a light for personal use: to get into my car, house and look for things in the dark. I also have an ultra violet that we use in the practice to demonstrate the nervous system in a way that makes the bodies’ miraculous abilities simple to understand. We have a model of a spine that has fiber optics in place of the spinal cord. Attached to the top is the Photon 3, It is then easy to demonstrate what the effect is on the nervous system that is not flowing freely. The light on continuously shows sympathetic mode-fight or flight, stress and the adrenals firing away, cortisol running rampant, or in the blinking mode it shows the signals traveling thru the body, as it should.
Your light is truly a thing of beauty and quality. More remarkable, however, was the fact that even though the postal department delivered my envelope without the lights to be serviced. This didn’t hinder your staff, as they promptly mailed out replacement lights.
I have owned your lights since they first came out and will continue to give them as gifts, proud to steer people to the highest quality product on the market, and a company that still cares what the consumer thinks.
Your product is superb. Your staff is priceless. Congrats on a job well done.

  36. Top-Of-PageApproximately 2 ½ years ago I purchased 25 Photon lights in blue and red. These were used for a medical team taken to the Sudan in Africa for relief work through our organization called Safe Harbor International Relief. Over sixty thousand dollars was spent on supplies, these little lights were the hit of the trip. They were one of the best items we had on this trip in an area with no lights. We continue to use them to this day.

  40. Each year, I volunteer my time as a Black Rock City Ranger at a “participants only” art event called “Burning Man”, located in the high Nevada desert. The volunteer “rangers” of this community serve the thousands of Black Rock participants by providing directions, medical attention, water, warmth, safety and of course light. During the pitch black nights, 3800 feet up on the flat expanse of dry lake-bed plya, running around on foot or on bicycle, you need a good, strong light that lets you see as well as be seen. Just as importantly you need things that don’t weigh you down. You must quickly respond to calls while remaining entirely mobile. Since cars aren’t allowed in Black Rock City, all call responses (except those few vehicles with special permits) must be carried out on foot or on pedal-bike. The most common injuries in the desert are 1) dehydration and 2) punctures, cuts or scrapes (from walking into things in the dark). As a ranger, you’re constantly carrying around water and a first-aid kit, plus water for yourself. For the past two years, my friend John Gilmore has purchased scads of your Photon lights, which he has kindly given away as presents to his friends at the event. Because of your wonderful little lights, along with John’s generosity, I have completely abandoned -all- my other flashlights. Yep, that’s right, the Photon lights are the only light I carry. I’m recommending them to all other rangers as a lightweight source of light. They serve as excellent bicycle lights all you need to do is tape one to the front of your bike and leave the switch on. They can be placed on your hat with a bit of Velcro, thereby replacing those cumbersome “head-band” or “hard-hat” style lights. You can just wear one around your neck on a chain. You can even tape them to the tops of your boots so you can see the ground when you walk. Either way, they’re hands down the BST and most versatile lighting product I’ve ever used, and are brighter than any other light I know of. People could see me a mile away when I flashed my impressive turquoise Photon at night. I think anyone in the care and response business (paramedics, police, ambulance drivers, first responders, doctors, ect.) should have at least a couple of these gems. They should be a standard piece of equipment. They are perfect.
